This month marks the 16th anniversary when the National Archive and Public Records Act was passed by the Legislative Assembly on 23 March 2007. Acting Governor the Hon. George McCarthy, OBE, JP, gave his assent on 11 April, and it was published as Supplement No. 3 with Cayman Islands Gazette No.10 on 14 May.

This law not only established the C. I. National Archive as custodian of the records of national significance, but also gave the National Archive provision to develop standards and guidance for the creation, management and disposal of current public records in the public service.

At the time of its passage, it was seen as a necessary legislative tool to facilitate the coming freedom of information law, the and would assist in finding information easier for civil servants, thereby ensuring prompt service for members of the public making freedom of information requests.
