The Ministry of Education, Employment & Gender Affairs (MEEGA) is inviting members of the public to view the display currently at the Historic George Town Library, “Her Story is Our History”. The display features framed replicas of the original 1948 and 1957 petitions signed by the women demanding their voice to be heard and the right to vote and stand for public office to be extended to them. The Cayman Islands National Archive (CINA) did a magnificent job of printing these fragile documents and the vast majority of the signatures can clearly be read.

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) has been officially extended to the Cayman Islands.
Minister of Gender Affairs, Hon. Tara Rivers was on hand at the United Nations in New York City when Chief of the UN Treaty Section, Mr. Santiago Villalpando, accepted the instrument from United Kingdom Minister for Women and Equalities, Caroline Dinenage on Wednesday, 16th March 2016. The UK's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Peter Wilson CMG, was also present to witness the occasion.

On 31st January 2015, the Gender Equality Tribunal will have completed its third year of operations as a result of the implementation of the Gender Equality Law, which came into force in 2012 to help redress gender discrimination, particularly in the area of employment. The five-person Tribunal is made up of members with specialised knowledge and experience in human resources, labour, gender and human rights.

Though we are mainly known for tropical weather and beautiful beaches, the Caribbean is also one of the most violent regions in the world and experiences a deplorable level of violence against women and girls. Here in the Cayman Islands we are not spared the evils of gender-based violence, which by definition includes rape, sexual assault, domestic violence, trafficking in women, forced prostitution, sexual harassment and harmful cultural practices.

On Saturday, 29th March 2014, the Ministry of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs hosted the first National Conference on Women. Through an interactive agenda, participants shared their experiences and perspectives on a wide range of issues – from sports, health and family planning to employment, human rights and participation in political and public life. The 2014 theme for International Women's Day (IWD) is ‘Inspiring Change', and we are pleased that on this day and indeed throughout Honouring Women Month the women of the Cayman Islands will be given many opportunities to participate in events that aim to encourage and inspire growth and change in all areas of their lives. There is an old proverb that states “The only constant is change.” And while we know that to be true, how often do we embrace change when it unexpectedly comes into our lives? Or do we often resist change, sometimes to our own detriment?
