Nearly 200 senior leaders attended the ‘Role of Leadership in Creating a Service Culture’ conference at the Family Life Centre on Tuesday, 8 April.

The Management Support Unit (MSU) of the Portfolio of the Civil Service (POCS) hosted the event. It featured international speaker Richard Solomon, Managing Director of the Development Consulting Center Limited (Trinidad); Cayman Islands Government E-Services Director Ian Tibbetts; Strategic Advisor in the MSU Peter Gough, and MSU Director Winston Sutherland.

The 2018 Civil Service Engagement Survey results show improvement across all areas and, last week, more than 400 civil servants attended an event themed around “Taking Employee Engagement to the Next Level.”

There is clear evidence from international studies that there is a link between increasing levels of employee engagement having positive impacts on customer service, employee well-being and organisational performance.

All civil servants will have the opportunity next week to sharpen professional and life skills and enhance wellbeing during Training and Development Week, hosted by the Portfolio of the Civil Service (PoCS).

The dynamic learning opportunity is to be held from 26 – 30 November 2018, with sessions in the Government Administration Building. The organisers say it will engage, challenge and inspire all civil servants.

In February this year, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson led a delegation of some 30 civil servants to attend the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) leadership conference in Toronto. The Cayman team (pictured above) then identified their top speakers from the conference, who have been invited to Cayman to share their insights with a broader audience.

The two-day leadership conference on 19 & 20 November caps off a series of leadership initiatives rolled out during the first year of our 5-Year Strategic Plan for a World-Class Civil Service.

Leaders create and ensure a diverse and collaborative working culture which encourages openness, transparency and trust.

Teamwork is crucial to the success of any organisation, and the members of any team are the key to unlocking success. Leaders set expectations and hold themselves and others accountable for proactively working together.

The Cayman Islands Government is pleased to announce a raft of measures, recently implemented by the Civil Service, to address the Unity Government’s commitment to cut red tape and to further the priorities of the 5-Year Strategic Plan.

Listed among the initiatives are:

■ the Immigration Department enabling customers into the Immigration Hall at 7.30 a.m. (an hour earlier than before), to facilitate earlier processing of customers and provide a more comfortable waiting environment;

Organisation-wide training that aims to improve service delivery and the workplace environment is being rolled out as part of the implementation of our 5-Year Strategic Plan for a World-Class Civil Service.

With a focus on “doing the right things and doing them right” the Cayman Islands Government (CIG), in partnership with UK based company CITI, has rolled out a programme of training and development across the CIG.

Effective leaders are flexible and confident. They make tough decisions, hold themselves and others accountable, exemplify public service values, and empower and inspire civil servants to deliver ambitious outcomes for the benefit of the Cayman Islands.

This month, senior leaders from across the public sector and additional participants drawn largely from the uniformed services learned how organisations can move beyond a command and control environment to empower their teams and create more leaders.

Leaders and customer service professionals within the Civil Service recently had the opportunity to consider best-practices and how to lead a customer-centric organisation.

This session was part of the ongoing programme to support our 5-Year Strategic Plan’s priority goals for 2018: Develop Exceptional Leadership and Deliver Outstanding Customer Experience (Goals 1 and 2). It is also part of efforts to build civil servants’ capacity to achieve Government’s broad outcomes.
